Also in this pack: every numeric answer computed twice, and 10 free problems you can try before you pay.

NCEES details from the MyNCEES exam prep store, October 2026.

The exam is hard. Your practice should be too.

You get 110 questions and 5 hours 20 minutes of exam time. Many are word problems: the givens are buried in a sentence, the units don't match, and the wrong choices are exactly what you get if you slip once.

A failed attempt costs you another $225 exam fee, and you can't retest until the next quarterly testing window. NCEES allows no more than three attempts in 12 months (NCEES FE exam page).

Two complaints come up again and again in FE study forums: practice problems that are easier than the exam, and answer keys with mistakes. If your practice is easy, the first hard problem you see is on exam day.

How this pack is built

  1. Written like exam questions. Word problems with the givens in the sentence, units you have to convert, and wrong choices built from the mistakes people actually make: wrong units, a missing term, an inverted ratio.
  2. Every numeric answer computed twice. The numbers come from code, not from someone typing them. A second, independent calculation recomputes every numeric answer; the ethics questions are checked against the NCEES Model Rules by number. If the two disagree, the problem is thrown out. While building this pack, 4 draws failed that check and were replaced.
  3. Tied to the handbook you get on exam day. Each solution names the FE Reference Handbook 10.6 section and page, so you practice finding the equation as well as using it.
  4. Weighted like the real exam. Problem counts follow the NCEES question ranges for all 15 knowledge areas.

Fundamental Principles · Multiple choice

A contaminant enters an ideal completely mixed flow reactor (CMFR) at 145 mg/L and decays by a first-order reaction with k = 3.9/d. The hydraulic residence time is 4 h. At steady state, the effluent concentration is most nearly:

A) 57.1 mg/L
B) 8.73 mg/L
C) 50.8 mg/L
D) 87.9 mg/L
Worked solution

Answer: D) 87.9 mg/L

Equation: Ct = Co/(1 + kθ) (first order, steady state)

  1. θ = 4 h = 4/24 d = 0.1667 d; kθ = 3.9 × 0.1667 = 0.6500
  2. Ct = 145/(1 + 0.6500) = 87.9 mg/L

Why the wrong choices are wrong:

  • A is the amount removed, not the effluent concentration.
  • B used θ in hours with k per day.
  • C used Co(1 - kθ), a zero-order-like straight line.

Handbook: FE Reference Handbook 10.6, Environmental Engineering, Steady-State Reactor Parameters (first order), p. 331.

Fluid Mechanics and Hydraulics · Multiple choice

A solid rectangular block 5 ft tall with a specific gravity of 0.75 floats upright in seawater (SG = 1.025). The depth of the block below the water line is most nearly:

A) 3.84 ft
B) 3.66 ft
C) 3.75 ft
D) 6.67 ft
Worked solution

Answer: B) 3.66 ft

Equation: Buoyant force = weight of displaced fluid; γf·Vsub = γb·V

  1. Floating: buoyant force = weight, so γf·A·y = γb·A·H
  2. y = H·SGb/SGf = 5 ft × 0.75/1.025 = 3.66 ft

Why the wrong choices are wrong:

  • A multiplied the two specific gravities instead of dividing.
  • C took the fluid as fresh water (SG 1.00).
  • D divided the height by the block's specific gravity instead of multiplying.

Handbook: FE Reference Handbook 10.6, Fluid Mechanics, Archimedes Principle and Buoyancy, p. 184.

Water and Wastewater · Fill in the blank

A circular clarifier 45 ft in diameter treats a flow of 1.96 MGD. Find the overflow rate in gpd/ft².

Worked solution

Answer: 1,230 gpd/ft²

Equation: vo = Q/A_surface, with A = πD²/4

  1. A = πD²/4 = π(45 ft)²/4 = 1,590 ft²
  2. Q = 1.96 MGD = 1,960,000 gal/d
  3. vo = Q/A = (1,960,000 gal/d)/(1,590 ft²) = 1,230 gpd/ft²

Handbook: FE Reference Handbook 10.6, Environmental Engineering, Clarifier (overflow rate), p. 345.

Who it is for

  • You are taking the FE Environmental exam and have studied the material, but need exam-style practice.
  • You are retaking and want to drill the areas your diagnostic report flagged.
  • Your exam is a few days to a few weeks away and you want one honest timed run first.
  • You want to get fast at finding equations in the FE Reference Handbook.

Who it is not for

  • You want video lessons or a full review course. This is practice, not teaching.
  • You want an app or an interactive online test. This is PDF.
  • You want real exam questions. No honest seller has them.
  • You need a refund guarantee. All sales are final; try the free sample first.

Questions

Which handbook edition do the page numbers use?

FE Reference Handbook 10.6, the current edition. Check which edition is assigned to your exam date in your MyNCEES account, where you can download it free.

How do I get the files?

By email, as PDFs, to the address you use at checkout. It usually takes under 10 minutes. If nothing arrives in an hour, check spam, then write to hello@engineerexamlab.com.

Are these real exam questions?

No. They are original problems in the style and proportions of the exam. Anyone who sells real exam questions is breaking NCEES rules.

How is this different from the NCEES practice exam?

The NCEES practice exam is written by NCEES from retired exam items, so it is the closest look at real questions. Use it. This pack gives you more problems to practice on after that: 100 by knowledge area plus a full 110-question mock, with the handbook page in every solution.

My exam is in two weeks. Is this still worth it?

Take the mock under the real time limit first, score it by knowledge area, then spend the remaining days on your three weakest areas with the practice set.

I failed once. Will this help on the retake?

It gives you exam-style practice in every knowledge area and a score sheet that shows where you lose points. Your NCEES diagnostic report tells you your weak areas; the practice set lets you drill exactly those. No one can promise a pass.

How hard are the problems?

They are written to exam level: word problems, unit conversions, and wrong choices built from real mistakes. Try the three on this page or the free sample and judge for yourself.

Is there a web or app version?

Not yet. The pack is PDF, so you can print it or work from a tablet next to the searchable handbook.

Do you offer refunds?

No. All sales are final, which is why the free sample exists. If you are not happy after buying, tell us and we send you more problems free.

Taking FE Civil instead?

There is a FE Civil pack built the same way at /fe-civil/.
